Outlaw smugglers Stella Star and Akton manage to pick up a castaway while running from the authorities, who turns out to be the only survivor from a secret mission to destroy a mysterious superweapon designed by the evil Count Zarth Arn. The smugglers are soon recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy to complete the mission, as well as to rescue the Emperor's son, who has gone missing. An outlaw smuggler and her alien companion are recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy to rescue his son and destroy a secret weapon by the evil Count Zarth Arn. Starcrash was my first worst movie. Sure, I had seen really bad movies before (Island of the Mushroom People, Yog - Monster from Outer Space, and an unexpected fairy tale shocker where a male ballerina, dressed in fiery tights, pranced around like a dancing flame), but they were all equally bad. But this one dug itself a hole deeper than the eye could see. Horrors!

I saw Starcrash at a drive-in theater in Texas where it was double-billed with Star Wars. That must also make it my first bona-fide B movie!

I haven't seen it since, but I do remember it being easily the worst movie I had ever seen. Bad FX, bad acting, bad script, and extreme jumpiness. The people in the car next to ours poked fun at every scene. I had never experienced anything so riotous. Thus was born my intrigue with cinematic masochism.

Did MST3K ever do this one? If not, they certainly missed out. Then again, I don't think they ever had the audacity to butcher Plan 9, an untouchable classic from which self-mockery just oozes. Starcrash has earned itself a spot alongside Plan 9, in that highly exclusive domain of The Absolutely Worst of All Time. I've got to get this on DVD. I guess that means I need a DVD player…. In this 1979 epic film, the good guys rescue the inhabitants of a small planet from the forces of evil. Like the sci-fi movies of the time, it too had some pretty impressive special effects. It started out like another great sci-fi movie, like Star wars. But the similarities between this movie and Star Wars quickly disappeared shortly after the movie began.

The special effects worsened as the movie dragged on.

By the time the movie ended, I had more than enough of "Starcrash".

When the movie came out in 1979, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. But after sitting through this movie, I wished I had!
